Dust off your roller skates and pull out your leg warmers…"Xanadu" is now on stage! Seriously. Based on Universal Pictures' 1980 film of the same name—starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly —"Xanadu" follows the journey of a magical Greek muse named Clio who descends from Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California to inspire struggling artist Sonny Malone to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time—the first roller disco. But, when Clio—disguised as an Australian roller girl named Kira—falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.
Sprinkled with parody references to the film, this hilarious musical adventure rolls along to the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, and includes new arrangements by Eric Stern of "I'm Alive," "Magic," and "Suddenly" as well as two classic Electric Light Orchestra songs—"Strange Magic" and "Evil Woman". The show opened on Broadway in 2007 and earned an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, a Drama Desk Award for Best Book, and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical. "Xanadu" is hilarity on wheels for adults, children, and anyone who ever wanted to feel inspired. Book by Douglas Carter Beane. Music and Lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar.
Music Directed by Ken Kimble
Choreographed by Felicity Stiverson
ASGT patrons will remember Melissa as the director of our sell-out production of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story in 2010. Now she's back to direct Xanadu, a hilarious roller-skating musical adventure based on the Universal Pictures' 1980 film of the same name that features very different music—hits from pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. Melissa is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she directed and stage managed numerous productions. In 2009 she joined ASGT as Production/Stage Manager of “Smokey Joe's Café” and Stage Manager for “Copacabana.” By day, Melissa is the Creative Director and Lead Designer at Intrigue Design Decor and has designed for the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Philadelphia Flower Show. An improv actress, she's performed at Standing O's Improv Night. Most weekends you can find her leading a hidden history pub crawl for Annapolis Pub Crawls. We're happy to have Melissa back at ASGT once again!
