Stipend Positions

Directors

Applications for directors are accepted and reviewed in the fall following our season announcement. A call for directors is posted on our website, Facebook page, and Twitter, and promoted via our e-mail newsletter and in the media. Candidates must complete a Director’s Questionnaire. The submission of a resume is encouraged. Interviews are generally held during November and December, and our final selection is made at the end of December. Please note: Directors may not appear in productions they direct, except as understudies.

Want to learn more about directing at ASGT? Please email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) with your questions or to request a Director’s Questionnaire, which will give you an idea of what we’re looking for. Completed forms can be e-mailed or printed and mailed to: Production Director, Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre, 143 Compromise Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Music Directors and Musicians

You can’t present musical theatre without music! ASGT is proud to use a live orchestra/band for our productions whenever possible. For the last six years all performances have featured live music. The style and nature of each production determines the size and mix of instrumentation.

Are you interested in serving as Music Director or as a Musician for ASGT productions? Please email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) ) to express your general interest or interest in a specific show.

Choreographer

With musical theatre comes dance—including tap, jazz, and more. From “West Side Story” to “Chicago”, ASGT has presented shows that feature all styles of dance. If you’re an experienced choreographer, or if you’re a dancer who’d like to gain experience with choreography, please contact us to let us know!

Interested in serving as Choreographer? Please email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) ) to express your general interest or interest in a specific show.

Stage Manager

The Stage Manager works hand-in-hand with the director during the rehearsal process to ready the production for performance, and takes over full responsibility for the show on opening night. There is no performance detail that the Stage Manager does not supervise. Theatre experience is essential. Candidates must be responsible and have a professional work ethic.

Are you interested in Stage Managing? Please email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) to express interest. Please note: Directors have a major say in the selection of a Stage Manager and may team with a candidate of their choice when applying to direct.

Internships

Two new internships in lighting and sound are being created for the 2012 performance season. More information will be available soon.

Auditions for Actors, Singers & Dancers

Artistic Support

Set Construction & Decoration

Each year, a set designer works with our Directors to design and build a set for each show. To reduce costs and accommodate a narrow window for construction, many pieces are redecorated and transitioned from show to show. Sets are generally used for only one season, as they suffer from exposure in our outdoor environment and our storage space is very limited. ASGT is always looking for qualified set designers as well as volunteers to assist with set construction and set decoration. We’d love your help!

Lighting & Sound

What good is an excellent show if you can’t see or hear it? Lighting and sound designers are key to each show’s success, helping to set the style and tone of the production. Unique challenges (and opportunities!) exist in the area of technical design at ASGT due to our outdoor environment. Experienced designers or theatre technicians looking to gain experience in design are encouraged to contact us to learn about opportunities to design at ASGT.

Costume Design & Construction

Are you an experienced costume designer? Or can you sew a button on a pair of pants? Anyone interested in costuming is encouraged to participate at ASGT. Our costumes may be designed and built, purchased, rented, or pulled from our costume closet. Regardless, every production requires a costume designer to assemble the show’s wardrobe and tailor items to the specific cast, as well as costume assistants to complete the work.

Props

What’s Singing in the Rain without an umbrella? Or Hairspray without cans of, well, hairspray? The Properties Manager is required to find all props utilized in each show, whether the items are purchased, borrowed, rented, or built to spec. They also catalog and organize all items for the cast, maintain and repair props during the production, and return borrowed items after closing night.

Are you interested in Sets, Lighting, Sound, Costumes, or Props? Please email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) to express your interest or complete our Participation Form to be put on file for future opportunities.

Technical Crew & Running Crew

Each show produced at ASGT has distinct crew requirements, including Assistant Stage Managers, light board and sound board operators, spotlight operators, backstage running crew, and much more. Whether you’re new to technical theatre or an old pro, we’d love for you to participate! Email the Production Director (prod_dir@summergarden.com) to express your interest or complete our Participation Form so we can find a place for you at ASGT.

Front of House

Box Office: Volunteers are needed on show nights to sell tickets, work at “Will Call”, make bank deposits, and keep sales records. We also need support during the week to process reservations, pull tickets, and return voicemail messages. Box Office volunteers may participate weekly or just a few nights each summer…it’s up to you!

Ushers: Ushers work on performance nights to help ASGT create a positive experience for our audience. They tidy up the theatre space before the show, greet patrons as they arrive, take tickets, hand out programs, help people to their seats, operate house lights, monitor any disruptive activity (very rare), answer audience questions, and clean up after the performance. And ushers get to see the show for free!

Interested? Please complete our Participation Form.

General Volunteers

We’d welcome your general support with cleaning, painting, errands, gardening, minor repairs, building maintenance, or whatever activity appeals to you! If you have specific business skills to offer – graphic design, photography, legal, accounting, contracting, etc. – please contact us and we will find a place for you at ASGT.

Interested? Please complete our Participation Form.

Board & Committees

ASGT’s Board of Directors is a group of dedicated volunteers who are committed not only to governing but to doing the work required for our audiences to enjoy “theatre under the stars” each summer. Participating at this level trades your time for the rewarding experience of partnering with others equally committed to assuring top-notch theatre experiences for the greater Annapolis community.

Officers and Board members serve two year terms, and meetings are held monthly. To learn more about the structure of the Board, visit Organization.

Several Board Committees meet regularly to address specific areas of operations. Committee members need not be Board members. Your participation would be most welcome! Current committees include:

  • Development: Plan and execute the annual Gala event and guide ASGT’s fundraising, including increasing charitable contributions from individuals, identifying prospects for Business Stars or Angels of ASGT, and directing the Stage/2 capital campaign.
  • Marketing/Publicity: Organize and execute the theatre’s public relations activities, including media contact, web content and social media, promotion, and more.
  • Facility Operations: Provide year-round maintenance of our physical structure and garden, as well as performance support including ushering and concessions.
  • Facility Planning: Oversee and manage details of building renovations, including the Stage/2 restoration project.
  • Financial: Strengthen our financial position by reviewing financial procedures, contracts, and box office operations.
  • Artistic: Provide long-term artistic vision, assist with show and director selection, and manage production details including technical support and educational opportunities.
  • Governance: Provide long-range organizational planning regarding the Board structure, Board development, Bylaw revision, and Operations Manual review.
