Taking Notes Kicks Off the Season

Memorable characterizations and youthful humor brought the sound of laughter and applause back onto the ASGT stage again this spring, as the St. Mary’s chapter of the International Thespian Society (ITS) returned to the Summer Garden stage with its 2008 original production, Taking Notes! 

	St. Mary’s students Alexandra Bernson (senior) and Meighan Middleton (junior) collaborated to write this year’s original ITS play, Taking Notes. This one-act musical comedy was part educational, part theatrical, part satirical…and all fun! It detailed the zany adventures of Riley Adams, a high-school student who finds his humdrum life transformed into a musical adventure.
Eighteen actors and actresses and a crew of ten more worked from October to May to produce and perform the second original ITS play to be presented to the public. Familiar show tunes received a few new twists: emotional students bemoaned the cafeteria’s “Food, Horrible Food,” and in “The Ballad of Mr. Scott,” eerie dancers (a la Sweeney Todd) pondered the disappearance of music teacher Mr. Scott, the cause of Riley’s troubles.
Taking Notes premiered at ASGT on May 1 - 3 to enthusiastic houses and clear skies. Thanks to the support and dedication of ASGT and its unflappable theatre patrons, the work of a few dozen eager and talented teenagers carried on the torch of live “theatre under the stars!” The International Thespian Society is an honors society dedicated to expanding education in the theatre for high school students. St. Mary’s ITS is an honors society that works interdependently with St. Mary’s Theatre, the high school drama program.
